The AI option for embedded systems is to use artificial intelligence, and embedded developers can seek to provide the most intelligent solutions. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as an important technology for the development of IoT and network physics systems, such as robots and auto-driving cars. The limitations of embedded hardware are that they cannot operate the various deep neural network (DNN) algorithms on which they rely. AI does not have to be limited to high-performance computing engines deployed in the server field. It is also proposed that AI technology be used as a way of managing the highly complex 5G New Radio protocol. Cell phones need to be analysed to provide optimal data speed. The number of channel parameters has exceeded the number of engineers developing efficient algorithms.

Capability. Algorithms that train data from field trials provide a more effective way of balancing different settings more effectively. Machine learning algorithms that operate on embedded hardware are becoming an effective option in maintaining the health of industrial equipment operating at a remote location. Traditional algorithms such as the Kalman filter can easily handle linear relationships between different types of input data (e.g. pressure, temperature and vibration). However, early warning of problems before the problem is usually identified through highly non-linear relationship changes.

The system can be trained in data from well-functioning and malfunctioning machines to detect potential problems when real-time data are found. However, neural networks, though popular today, are not the only AI solution available. Many algorithms can be applied, and alternative solutions may be best suited to the task at hand.

A possible solution can be found in a rule-based AI. By coding expert knowledge in the rules bank, this can draw on the expertise of experts in the field, rather than on direct machine learning. The reasoning engine analyses the data according to the rules and tries to find the best match for the conditions encountered. The rules-based system has lower calculation costs, but if conditions are difficult to express in simple terms, or if the relationship between data and operations is not well understood, developers will encounter difficulties. The latter applies to voice and image recognition, which is where machines learn to perform.

Machine learning is closely related to the optimization process. A given input database element, the machine learning algorithm, will try to find the most appropriate classification or sorting method. A curved algorithm based on technologies such as linear regression can be considered the simplest machine learning algorithm: a multiform algorithm that uses data points to develop the most appropriate algorithm, and can then be used to determine the most likely output for the given input benchmark. The curve is intended to apply only to a very small system. Real machine learning applications can handle complex high-dimensional data.

A typical algorithm is based on a qualitative algorithm, but many other types of cluster analysis are used in machine learning. A system based on a qualitative heart uses geometry between data points to determine whether they belong to one group or another. Cluster analysis is usually an iterative process in which different criteria are applied to determine the location of boundary formation between clusters and the closeness of the relevant data points in individual clusters. However, the technology can effectively prove that the data model of the field expert may be avoided. Another option for grouping data into categories is to support vector machines (SVMs), which can classify ultra-dimensional data along the hyperlevel created by the use of optimized technology.

The decision tree provides a method of using cluster data in the rules library. The decision tree provides the AI algorithm with a method of obtaining answers through data input. Each branch of the tree can be determined by a cluster analysis of the input data. For example, the system may perform differently when it is above a given temperature, so acceptable pressure readings under other conditions may help to indicate problems. The decision tree can use these combinations to find the set of rules that are best suited to the situation. Although DNN usually requires high-performance hardware to operate in real time, structures such as the confrontational neural network are simpler and have been successfully achieved on mobile robots based on 32 or 64-bit processors, such as those in the Raspberry Pi platform. The main advantage of DNN is that it uses many layers. Layer structure makes it possible for neutrons to encode connections between multidimensional data elements, which may be highly separate in space and time, but which show important relationships during training.

A disadvantage of DNN, in addition to its computational costs, is that it requires a great deal of data to be trained. AI researchers are studying other algorithms, such as those based on the Gaussian process.

In applications with complex requirements, one option may be to use simple AI algorithms in embedded devices to find anomalies in the input data, and then ask for more detailed viewing of the data from the cloud to provide more accurate answers. Such splits will help maintain real-time performance, limit the amount of data to be transported at long distances and ensure continuity even in the case of temporary network disruptions. If the connection is lost, the embedded system allows for the cache of suspect data until there is an opportunity to check them through the cloud service.

AWS provides access to various hardware platforms that apply to machine learning, including general server blades, GPU accelerators, and FPGA. Open-source frameworks (e.g. Caffe and Tensorflow) can be used to build DNNs operating in clouds, which are now widely used by AI practitioners.

IBM has established a direct interface between its Watson AI platform and the Raaspberry Pi panel, thus making it easy to prototype machine learning applications before working on the final architecture. ARM provides similar links to Watson through its mbed Iot device platform.

Although AI may look like a new front for computing, the availability of low-cost high-performance panels such as Raspberry Pi and access to cloud-based machine learning services mean that embedded developers have direct access to algorithms discovered in the entire machine learning field over the last few decades. As more advanced technologies develop, a combination of on-board processing and cloud computing will ensure that embedded developers are able to keep up with the times and provide the most intelligent solutions possible.
