From new piracy protection to comfort and safety applications, Volkswagen describes the future uses of what is known as "UWB." Volkswagen Motors describes the future applications of what is called "UWB".

UWB real-time security

Through a combination of artificial intelligence and sensors, cars can learn personal gestures. In this way, they can support drivers, such as automatically opening trunks.

GPS and Google maps apply to outdoor environments, while ultrabroadband (UWB) applies to outdoors and indoors: this is a very precise technical requirement for positioning and distance measurement. In addition, this technology provides the highest level of network security.

UWB provides more comfort for drivers

Arteon of Kurkuma-Metallic shows the potential of UWB to improve safety and comfort. A research vehicle that is not special at first sight -- if it is not for a light sticker -- has many advantages: Mak Rohde, head of Volkswagen's body electronics and door-bargaining system, and Lars Reger, chief technical officer of Nshipur Semiconductor, have installed the latest networking features. The vehicle is also evidence of close cooperation between partners in research and development.

That's how the UWB's piracy system works.

Integrated chips in cars (e.g., on all four doors and trunks) communicate with each other and with other mini-launchers (e.g., car keys). Six chips constantly transmit signals and "talk" to each other. By measuring the time these signals are sent and received -- the so-called "flight time" -- the exact location of the owner. The technology used to intercept radio signals for the purpose of stealing vehicles is no longer possible.

The larger the signal, the closer the user to the vehicle. The signal may be relayed and used by an unauthorized person.

UWB can achieve real centimetre-grade precision, and above all, user-protected location control - at any time and at the speed of light. At the same time, it is a real credibility check that a legitimate driver or passenger is approaching the vehicle.

Communication in milliseconds between chips to help pilots

The potential of the UWB is enormous: it serves very precise positioning and determination of distance within and around vehicles, thus making many exciting new applications.

For example, new applications such as the detection of people and animals in vehicles, auto-charter parking ("service parking"), auto-activation of trailer coupons or easy access to parking spaces, and automatic payment upon departure.

For example, in the area of automobiles and telecommunications, there is a high demand for safe and accurate positioning techniques. The precise detection techniques inside and outside buildings are very popular. UWB meets these requirements, and is much better than existing wireless technologies (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS). It captures accurate information, such as the location and movement of UWB launchers, or the distance of real-time processing to other equipment, with only a few centimetres of precision, and provides us with a wide range of new opportunities.

Car theft, based on the capture of the car and its key, will become more complex when UWB is involved...

In addition, the combination of artificial intelligence and sensors can learn personalized gestures, for example by opening the trunk.

This year, we brought the first UWB application into bulk production, and we took another decisive step in preventing theft. Maik Rohde explained. Specifically, Volkswagen will soon be the first company to integrate UWB into a new car. Chief Technical Officer Lars Reger, Nshipur. We have seen the great potential of UWB. We are working to further develop this technology, standardize it and define more applications.

Future developments may be child seat recognition. UWB can identify the correct location of the children's seat to the cm -- it can be identified anywhere in the car. In this way, the UWB ensures the correct installation. This can save lives. If the children's seat is installed on the front passenger seat, the UWB automatically removes the airbag.

UWB checks the proper installation of the baby seat and the proper activation or decommissioning of the airbag.

Another idea is called "smart trailer coupling." With the help of the UWB chip, the vehicle automatically detects when it approaches the trailer. In this case, the vehicle automatically pulls out of the back and allows it to bind. This is not the last chapter: later, the vehicle and the trailer can identify the exact location of the two parties and independently bind.

The vehicle can identify the trailer and automatically reach out to the trailer's axis.

Volkswagen and Nshipur are developing many other UWB applications.
